Branches with a face is a kinetic sculpture made from branches, stones and second-hand mechanical parts sourced in little stalls near Jongno-3-ga metrostation. The work was created in the context of my exchange period at K’Arts University in Seoul. Inspired by Immanel Levinas’ idea of the face as the foundation of moral behavior, I explored how I could experience the tree as ‘other’, constructing an anthropomorphic shaping using branches and moving it using a geared motor.
