Room to Breathe is a olfactory installation developed in collaboration with Maidie van den Bos. Maidie van den Bos extracts smells from plants through a water-based process, resulting in the creation of hydrolats. Together we developed an installation that can disperse the smells of these hydrolats into a space by designing an installation with PVC pipes, caps and ultrasonic mist makers.
When someone entered the room, the installation would activate, filling the space with a scent for a brief duration. The fragrance was updated weekly by replenishing the bucket that supplied the installation with a new hydrolat.
The first version of the installation was crafted for Book of Premonitions, an opera based on text written by high school students. In this second version, we improved the design.
